In May of 2024, I was contacted by producer Alessandra Sandhaus about an amazing opportunity to direct and animate a promo for the first issue of Metro Boomin‘s premiere comic, “THE RISE.”
A stylish origin story of Metro’s journey in the world of music, THE RISE featured original artwork by Harvey and Eisner Award Winner Vasilis Lolos, the comic is a visual love letter to the Silver Age of Comics, heavily inspired by the illustrative work of comic legend, Jack Kirby. Upon reading the full issue, I decided it would be a disservice not to lean heavily into the printed comic book look and feel— the paneling, the printed color halftones on the aged paper, the animated onomatopoeia, the posterized animation it all had to jump off the page and come to life. The animation itself took heavy inspiration from MF DOOM and Madlib’s legendary animated music video for All Caps (animated by James Reitano) and Sony’s Spider-Verse movies.
